3 Technologies to detect Blood Alcohol Content
When people talk about principles of breath alcohol monitoring, it’s all about within one of the 3 sensing methods: Semiconductor, Fuel Cell, Infrared Spectroscopy.
Semiconductor
When people’s exhaled breath sample with alcohol bumps to semiconductor sensor, normally contained tin-oxide substance, the molecules of sample gas will be oxidized, resulting a change of sensor’s electric conductivity. The difference will be measured and calculated to reveal the blood alcohol content of the sample.

Fuel Cell
Fuel Cell sensor is mostly equipped with platinum electrodes enclosed by porous acid-electrolyte materials. If there’s gas with ethanol hits the sensor, a chemistry occurs, which the electrodes oxidize the ethanol into acetic acid, protons and electrons. Electric current is generated as the electrons move. The strength of the current will be measured, as the greater of current produced responds to the more of alcohol oxidized. The BAC will be determined based on the way.
Infrared Spectroscopy
The alcohol molecules absorb specific wavelengths of infrared radiation. Therefore, the concentration of BAC is calculated based upon how much of absorption of selected infrared energy.
